Zakat in the broad sense

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and prayers and peace be upon our master Muhammad, the truthful in promise and trustworthy.
Some people mistakenly think that zakat is limited to giving a portion of one's wealth once it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold). However, the concept of zakat is far broader and deeper than that.
If you are a doctor, the zakat of your knowledge is to treat those in need. In fact, there is zakat on everything. The zakat on knowledge is to use it in service of others, especially the poor.
By Allah, in Damascus, there is a doctor who is beloved by all. He treats everyone with compassion and generosity. When he knows a patient is poor, he writes a prescription with a special signature that allows the patient to receive the medicine free of charge. This doctor has earned such respect and status in our country that if he were to request something from the highest authorities, they would honor his request without hesitation.
